LET’S BE ON THE JOURNEY OF SUCCESSFUL IVF

Good News for those who are trying and your doctor has advised the IVF. It simply means you are closer to your dreams of achieving parenthood. As the name indicates, IVF stands for In-vitro Fertilization. In vitro means in glass or in laboratory conditions.
As the choice of IVF is chosen and the decision is based on the clinical records, and medical history of both partners, the current options available for pregnancy and the best choice is zeroed upon.
In the broader picture, any assistance that is required from outside for pregnancy & delivery is very important. Medical advice is a very important part of it.
As you are on the journey of IVF, you are eager to know, what are the success rates or chances of success. A recent study says, the younger & earlier, you start, the better the chances of IVF success.
What is the IVF Procedure?
IVF is a process of achieving pregnancy by having a number of eggs produced by women with the help of the best quality hormonal injections, extracting them and made to fuse with male sperms in laboratory conditions. After the fertilization, the embryo is transferred to the womb or uterus of a woman.
What is the real concern about IVF Success?
Some couples don’t have a success with single IVF cycle and real concerns arise about the cost & time. All need to understand, that the cost & time of pregnancy is the real cost of IVF and is not limited to a number of cycles. The golden rule is, that the younger and earlier you start, the more chances of success are.
Status of the ovaries, how functional are they, what about the quality of eggs produced, quality of sperms, nature of embryo formed and then its implantation which happens with the help of medicines, infrastructure, the expertise of team etc. All matters for success.
Multiple cycles not only add up to the cost but also impacts the success rates, which differ with age. Age is the main point that success depends on.
What are the chances of success with IVF? It depends on,
The female & partner’s age.
The duration & severity of infertility.
Forms of Infertility (primary or second)
Different Causes & concerns of infertility
The egg, sperm and embryo’s qualities
The development of the endometrium to name a few.
Let’s be practical with successful IVF:
The success rate of IVF/ICSI is around \30-35% per embryo transfer in the well-programmed cycle. It means, that 3 patients out of 10 probably will successfully carry the baby home, the rest need to go for additional cycles of IVF. The 1st high-quality IVF cycle is likely to be successful. More frustrating is the failure to achieve the same. it is to understand that IVF is the most important & established procedure with higher success rates as compared to other procedures. IVF is not a miracle.
The success of IVF depends on the factors stated above
Fresh or frozen embryo transfer: which is better in the true sense?
The success rate is found to be higher with frozen embryos as compared to fresh embryos. Frozen cycles tend to have a higher success rate as the embryos that survive the thawing process are most adaptable, resulting in higher chances of achieving a pregnancy.
Fresh embryo transfer happens 5 days after egg retrieval, there is a shorter span, which is of 5 days for conception. Doctors prefer to look into the progesterone level at this stage. An elevated progesterone level will not allow embryo implantation.
Frozen embryo transfer typically happens 6-8 weeks after the embryo is frozen. This frozen embryo can have better chances to develop in a baby due to the favorable hormonal condition. Newer techniques in the preservation of embryos have an added advantage.
Likewise, Donor eggs if, obtained from, a younger donor who is medically fit, increases the chances of success rates. Also, better sperm quality always ensures a higher chance of conception.
In IVF Success Story, the age of the male partner matters too.
The ageing of the father also has an effect on fertility because it affects the quality of the sperm, by causing damage to the Sperm DNA, thereby reducing the capacity to fertilize as well as the quality of embryos. Damage to the Sperm DNA is greatly higher in men who have reached 45 years old.
